Keeping the Happy in Happy Holidays for National Security Clearance Holders

If someone in your life holds security clearance, chances are you know they are hard workers, and it sure can be stressful keeping our nation safeguarded. During this Holiday season, here are a few considerations for security clearance holders and those close to them, so that they can follow guidelines, stay safely employed, and feel appreciated.

  1. Pre-Authorization for Trips Overseas: If you’re planning a trip overseas for business, family, or pleasure and you hold a security clearance, you’ll have to do a little more preparation than a traditional civilian. Before you step on that plane or boat, you’ll have to report your travel plans to your security office and you’ll have to obtain pre-authorization. Failure to do so can result in reprimand or be considered a violation.
  2. Stay Out of Trouble: Have a tendency to fight with a family member? Does alcohol flow freely during this season? You wouldn’t be alone if you answered yes to those questions, but it isn’t something to ignore as a clearance holder, as it can impact your national security career. This year, watch alcohol intake and keep your temperament when a family argument arises.
  3. Holiday Gift-Giving: Security Clearance holders have a tendency to be overlooked at gift-giving time. They are often behind the scenes and may not attend holiday parties. Show your appreciation by offering something like a book, food item, travel accessory, or clothing item. It’s important to remember there are generally rules that apply to what you can and can’t gift. Over-the-top gifts may violate policy, but more importantly they may make someone feel uncomfortable, and no one wants that. The other thing to keep in mind is prohibited items. DNA kits were a popular gift item a few years back– but many security clearance holders may not be able to take advantage. CBD products are also EVERYWHERE today, but most employees are required to just say no. It is nice to recognize and acknowledge the national security workers in your life, just be sure to do so appropriately.

From all of us at Security First & Associates, we hope you and your family have a happy and SAFE holiday season.
