St. Patrick’s Day, and the Choices We Make

St Patrick's Day DUI awareness for security clearance holders

Every year, March gives us a moment. A cultural pause wrapped in green, celebration, and the promise of spring. St. Patrick’s Day shows up with parades, gatherings, and traditions we look forward to. But it also brings something else—something we don’t talk about enough…A spike in impaired driving.

Law enforcement agencies, year after year, report an increase in DUI incidents during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. It’s predictable. It’s preventable. And yet it keeps happening.

And this month, the story matters.

Because in the national security community, a DUI isn’t just a legal issue. It’s a reportable incident under NISPOM 32 CFR Part 117, meaning it can impact clearances, trust, and mission readiness.

Not because anyone is out to punish mistakes—but because risk has a ripple effect. One decision made in a moment can echo far beyond the moment itself.

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t the problem.

Our choices are.

Celebration isn’t dangerous.

Impaired judgment is.

This March, we get another chance to shift the narrative—to prove that awareness isn’t a buzzword, but a behavior.

  • If you celebrate, celebrate smart.
  • If you drink, plan ahead.
  • If you see someone wavering, step in.

We don’t control every threat in our world, but this one?

This one we absolutely can.

And the story you choose to tell through your actions this month may be more important than you realize.

Remember – Please don’t Drink & Drive
