When my daughter was in college, her Honda Civic started having engine trouble. As a single parent, I knew I was looking at funding her Undergrad, and when she told me she “had a guy” who could do the repair for cheap, I went along with her plan to have him look at the car.
Even though I had a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach.
My daughter was depending on that car to take her around town to get to her part-time job, to shop for groceries, and to run all kinds of other errands.
She was depending on that car to come home to see me, as well.
You can probably imagine where this story is headed. “That guy” did the work. I paid him, and indeed, the job was less expensive than what the charge would have been at the dealership or at a certified mechanic…which I know, because not only did I end up paying a certified mechanic a week later when my daughter broke down on the side of the road on the way home from her job, but I also lost a lot of time researching reviews on Google and Yelp to find a good, reliable person to do the job.
I also lost a lot of productivity worrying about my daughter until the tow truck came.
So, there I was, out not only the money I’d originally spent, plus the money I ended up spending to get it fixed right, and I was out a lot of time and aggravation.
In every business, there are tasks that you’re just not equipped to DIY. Of greater importance, when you try to do these tasks yourself, it can even put your business in danger, at the risk of losing money, time, and in the case of security, losing your facility security clearance.
Don’t try to handle your security in-house, or worse, outsource it to “that guy:” You can’t just handle your security program requirements to your nephew or someone who’s had a few classes in the subject manage your security program, or make them your facilities security officer. The cheaper option may be attractive, but in the long run, it can end up costing you an arm and a leg or even having your security program shut down.
When it comes to security, this is when you call a professional. You don’t want to be the one paying twice when something gets done wrong the first time, or worse, find your company figuratively stuck out on the side of the road, can’t bid on contracts, can’t process clearances, or, with a security crisis that exposes your Private Identifiable Information (PII) to a breach. “That Guy” never saw it coming.
